I was teaching the kids how to solve math problems in English.
It wasn't the first time, but I used a different beginning today.
I didn't take any of the problems from the text book for example.
Here's how I did it.
Around five minutes before the recess..
Sophia: How many boys/girls are there in Sophia's English class?
Ss: Three./Five. (After i said "Give me a sentence, please.")
There are three boys / five girls in Sophia's English class.
(I wrote the two senteces on the board when they answered.)
Then, i wrote the question "How many students are there in her class?" and
ask the students to read at the same time.
Before i finished writing the question, some kids had already said the answer,
yet i ignored and said, "Oh! This is really difficult! I think you need some
time to solve the problem! Let's take a break and tell me the answer later."
Haha.. At that moment, all of them KNEW that it's easy to solve the problem.
After the ten-minute break, I wrote "addition" and "subtraction" on the board,
have them read the words several times with hand gestures and read the three
previos sentences again.
Sophia: (Write "Operation: ____________")
Which operation do we need? Addition or Subtraction?
Ss: Addtion. (Oh! How smart! haha..)
Sophia: (Write "Equation: ____________")
Can you tell me the equation?
three...(It's a hint. Also write "3 +" before they answer if necessary)
Ss: Three plus five equals eight.
Sophia: (Write "Solution: _____________________________________")
So how many students are there in Sophia's class? What's the solution?
Ss: There are eight students in Sophia's/her class.
(heehee.. That's why i love you soooo much.)
(Write the sentence on the board at the same time. )
After those steps, we continued solving the problems from the text book.
